Air purifiers known also as air cleaners are one of the best ways to clean the air from your home & office. Those products are especially recommended for people who might have asthma, smoke, live in a polluted area, or have pets and kids around. Worry no more if the air you breathe is clean or dirty, we have got it covered.

Having fresh air is a luxury we all like to have, but most of us don’t realize how much it truly matters. As the pollution in our environment has grown (especially in big cities), many people are realizing how much it affects us and our health. An air purifier can help eliminate many of the problems that come with polluted air.

Have you ever had to hide in an emergency shelter during a tornado or hurricane? If so, you’ve been inside a space with its own air purification system. Some of the biggest shelters in the country are equipped with machines that clean the air as it enters and exits the facility. The purpose of these machines is to ensure everyone inside has enough oxygen to survive extreme weather situations.

While no home or business is completely impervious to outside elements, we can all take steps to protect ourselves from harmful elements that lurk around us on a daily basis. Air purifiers are an excellent way to filter out debris, bacteria and allergens from indoor air. By installing one in your home or office, you’ll gain a number of valuable benefits, here we presented 10 of the most important ones:

1. Purifies the Air in Your Home

Air purifiers remove contaminants and pollutants from the air, including bacteria, viruses, dust mites, odors, pet dander, mold spores, and smoke. Air purifiers filter ambient air in your home to provide you with cleaner, healthier air.

2. Reduces Allergens

Air purifiers are highly effective at removing allergens from the air. For those who suffer from allergies or asthma stemming from dust mites, pollen, and pet dander, air purifiers can help reduce allergy symptoms by removing these allergens from the air.

3. Removes Mold Spores

Mold is a common cause for allergies and asthma attacks that can lead to severe respiratory problems if left untreated. In addition to removing mold spores from the air, an air purifier also removes mold in your home by drying up excess moisture that helps mold grow.

4. Kills Viruses & Bacteria

The UVC light inside of an air purifier is highly effective at killing viruses and bacteria in your home, including colds and flu viruses as well as airborne pathogens like Legionella pneumophila (Legionnaires’ disease) or Tuberculosis bacillus.

5. Reduce dust mites – Dust mites are tiny creatures that live in your home and feed on dead skin cells shed by humans and pets. They can be a major cause of allergies in humans.

6. Improve the quality of indoor air – Air purifiers can reduce the number of contaminants in your home to improve the quality of indoor air.

7. Remove pet dander – Pet dander refers to microscopic skin scales shed by cats, dogs, and other animals with fur or feathers. Air purifiers can help remove these particles from the air and make it easier for people with allergies to breathe.

8. Help people suffering from asthma – Air filters can remove pollutants such as dust and pollen that can trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals.

9. Reduce the risk of lung cancer – Indoor air pollution is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Air filters can help reduce this risk because they remove pollutants like smoke and chemical vapors from the air you breathe inside your home or office

10. Remove secondhand smoke – Secondhand smoke contains both sidestream smoke (smoke that has been exhaled by a smoker) and environmental tobacco smoke (smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe). Secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer.

Air purifiers are a great investment for improving the quality of air in your home. They’re especially beneficial for people suffering from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory problems.

Is good to keep in mind that:

  • An entry level air purifier is below 200 $
  • A mid-range is around 400-500 $
  • A premium air purifier can reach up to 600 $, or even 900 $

Did you know that air pollution might have in some cases several side effects like respiratory infections, hearth diseases, lung cancer or even irreversible loss of sight? 7.000.000 people die each year from air pollution (both indoor/outdoor)

Now that I caught your attention maybe you see with other eyes the importance of having an air purifier in your room (especially if you are working from home and you stay 10-12 hours+ in the same room everyday)

Estimated reading time: 31 minutes

Air purifier search interest worldwide increased from 2016, and even more from the end of 2019. The top countries looking for this topic are Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand.

We are here not to make you bored with HEPA filters or other complicated notions, but rather to show you directly the best solutions out there. For example, from Philips brand, the best one you can get at this point if you have a large room, is the air purifier 5000. This bad boy has an awesome design, good performance with a minimum noise, that makes you breathe cleaner air. You can control the purifier from the app as well and check the indoor air quality. The price for this air purifier is 700 $.

*Personally, I got the Philips 4000i model (AC3858/50) on a Black Friday deal this year (2021) for about 600$ (reduced from 800$) and I like that it has a modern & user-friendly display (located at top of the purifier) with touch panel, is easy to set up, it has an attractive design, is energy-efficient, quiet, portable and gets the job done in just about 2-5 minutes, which is enough to get clean & fresh air in my room. They even stated on their website that this purifier cleans the air in a 20 m² room in less than 6 min which I found true.

The purifier does an amazing job in absorbing dust, smoke, pollen, viruses, bacteria, strong odors, harmful gases, TVOCs (total volatile organic compounds) and any food smells you might have.

Setting up the purifier is really easy and can be done in just 5 simple steps!

  1. Take the product out of the box
  2. Take out the protective plastic from the filter
  3. Attach the filter back into the purifier
  4. Plug the purifier to a power source
  5. Turn it on, select your mode and you are done !

The digital display has 5 buttons where you can check the following data:

  • PM 2.5 – which shows the particulate matter in your room
  • IAI – indoor allergen index
  • Gas Level
  • Filter Life %

This air purifier might not be the most affordable one, but it has the best price-quality ratio. Philips 4000i has a large filter surface area and high area coverage (of up to 73 m²) with 4 power modes (including sleep mode) for fan speed. For example, on the lowest setting (sleep) it has only 18 dB, so it’s really quiet and good to use for the bedroom at night, while at the maximum level (Turbo) it goes up to 57 dB, with an exceptional performance which can be used in the daytime for living room, or in an emergency case, like having a smoke in your home from a fire outside (it happened to me this summer). 4000i air purifier from Philips has a durable body, cleans the air at 270 degrees, and looks like a modern loudspeaker in my opinion. Even though is a 10 kilos air purifier, it has a carrying handle which makes it easier to move around.

I like the fact that this air purifier has long-lasting filters, which last for up to 3 years (for daily use), or even 5 years if you are using it 2-3 times a week (the only maintenance is to vacuum or clean the prefilter monthly). The device’s filter indicator light shows you on the display when is the time to clean the filter & laser dust sensor. Also, you can check the filter health in the menu and when is below 10%, it needs to be replaced with a new one. For example, mine is at 96% filter life, after using the product for about 4 months, almost daily use for 1 to 3 hours/day, and in some cases left in sleep mode when I go to sleep. This air purifier has 3 filters, a prefilter, a carbon filter, and a HEPA filter. Philips 4000i has a CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 610 m³/h which is really good for medium to large rooms. For small rooms, it can clean the air in less than 2 minutes, and for medium, to large rooms, it can do it in 5 to 20 minutes max.

⬇ For a CADR Calculator (in cfm & m³/h), feel free to use this tool below ⬇
https://reviewsofairpurifiers.com/cadr-calculator/

The feedback you get regarding the air quality of your room is displayed through LED ring colors (from the blue color for good air quality to purple, pink, and red for worse) & 4 metrics with associated numbers for detecting the bad stuff ;).

I like that this air purifier tests air quality very quickly (thanks to the professional dual sensor which does 1000 scans a second for real-time feedback) and it can automatically adjust the fan speed to match.

The replacement filters for this air purifier have an average lifetime of 3 years of daily use. Connecting the product with your smartphone is really easy and it should take less than 2 minutes, and this way you can change the fan speed and access the air purifier menu from the mobile app Clean Home+. Basically, your smartphone becomes the remote control for your air purifier, how cool is that?

I wish they add in a future software update a programmable timer from the display (at the moment it can be done only via app)

Philips 4000i is good for rooms of up to 73 m² and at the moment of writing this article, the 4000i model is out of stock, so that’s why we listed the Philips 5000 model initially.

One of the videos that moved me to purchase this product you can find below:

If you are looking to improve the air quality of your home and office, just get one of these, is absolutely a good investment in your health and those around you. Keep in mind that air purifiers are not a replacement for outdoor air (personally I turn on my Philips air purifier after closing the windows and going to sleep, it really helps me sleep better; I also turn it on when I have guests & I want some fresh & clean air). I really think that this product helped me in terms of sleep quality. Overall, this air purifier will improve your quality of life and productivity so give it a chance.

One little disadvantage I noticed it has is that after filtering the air, it dries it a bit, but I’ll get a humidifier this winter and things should be good.

Philips products are sold the most in US, Netherlands, Canada, Poland & India, and apart from their main website, you can check more about this company & their products on their Youtube channel, Facebook page, Reddit, and Linkedin.

Good to know!

  • The warranty for most air purifiers is between 1 to even 10 years (in case of IQAir HealthPro Plus which uses a HyperHEPA filter)
  • CADR metric (Clean air delivery rate) measures the effectiveness of an air purifier. The higher, the better. For example, Philips 4000i model has 610 m³/h
  • All air purifiers have between 2 to 6 speeds available.
  • Most air purifiers have around 3-5 filters in them (most of them consisting of  HEPA filter, washable prefilter, ionizer, carbon filter and odor filter)
  • Most air purifiers will get a bit noisy when used in higher speeds
  • For most air purifier brands you need to clean the filters each month (especially if you are using them daily) and change the filters each year, or at 2 years period (for a cost of about 20 to 200 $)
  • Before cleaning & replacing filters, remember to disconnect the product from power source.
  • Nowadays, most air purifiers are aesthetically pleasing and coming in 2 to 5 colors available, but what’s mattering the most is what’s inside.

  • The noise level for most purifiers is between 17 to 70 db
  • Each air purifier has its own strengths and weaknesses compared to others from a similar budget range so make sure you get the features you really want and are important to you.
  • Most of those products can be found on Amazon, Walmart or directly on their main website
  • The price for an air purifier can vary from only 8 $ to even 900$
  • Avoid placing objects on the purifiers
  • Air purifiers can be put in a corner, but they function the best when are in the middle of the room (especially those that filter air at 270 degree)
  • When using any air purifier, any doors & windows must be closed.
  • For a small room, the minimum CADR rating must be above 65, while for a big room it should be at least 390 (data suggested by the independent executive agency of the United States, EPA – Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Try to get an air purifier which has the energy star label, which means that your product is meeting the standards for energy efficiency
  • Avoid having the air purifier in a room with flammable substances because it can damage your unit and lower the performance
  • Remember to always follow the manual instructions before playing with an air purifier (especially if is your first one you ever purchased)
